Raynes Park Vale 3 - 1 Horley Town
FA CUP Extra Preliminary Round – Wed 20th Aug 2008
It
was nose-bleed time at Grand Drive as the Vale won
an FA Cup tie for the first time since 1994 after overcoming Horley
Town 3-1 in their extra-preliminary round replay.
Things
didn’t go according to plan before the game, as Marc Skinner pulled up lame in the warm-up and Josh Williams was promoted
to take his place.
Once
the game got underway Vale started to enjoy the majority of possession in the early stages, but were guilty of lazy passing
that invariably found a player in maroon rather than the intended target.
Despite
the rain, and the greasy surface, the Vale started to settle and took the lead after fifteen minutes when some clever footwork
from Dave Ellard in the Horley box gave him time to feed Alex Zieleniewski to rifle home.
Raynes Park on top now and a Zieleniewski
header was cleared off the line to keep Horley in touching distance.
That
missed chance came back to haunt the home side when five minutes later Horley were on level terms after a free-kick was floated
into the box and met with an unmarked header.
The
rest of the first-half saw both teams sharing possession and looking slightly edgy as they both looked more scared of losing
rather than trying to win the tie.
When
half-time came a few of the spectators where predicting a long night ahead as the game looked destined for extra-time.
In
reality the break worked in different ways for both teams as Raynes
Park came out with a confident stride and new purpose and Horley appeared
slightly disjointed.
The
new look Vale took the lead after 65 minutes when a free-kick on the edge of the box was rifled home by Joe Diggins with the
help of a slight deflection from a Horley defender.
With
their heads up, Raynes Park went in search of the all important third goal and it came on 70 minutes when a through ball from
Stefan Philips found Ellard who worked his magic feet again in the Horley box before sliding the ball through to the onrushing
Zieleniewski whose first time shot beat the Horley keeper to give Vale a two goal cushion.
Nathan
Turner was brought on to bolster the attack and within two minutes of his arrival, he was denied one of the most blatant penalties you could ever wish to see after being wrestled by a despairing Horley defender.
Everybody in the crowd was waiting for the referees whistle or the linesman’s flag to indicate the penalty award but
none came.
Almost
as though the Vale’s noses were being rubbed in it, the referee decided to award Horley a penalty in the 80th
minute for something that escaped everybody else at Grand Drive.
But
cometh the hour, cometh the man and a new hero was born when Vale keeper George Ellis pulled off a great save to deny Horley
the chance to narrow the gap and make the last ten minutes a nail biting end to the game.
The
penalty miss seemed to knock the stuffing out of Horley and Raynes Park saw out the remainder of the match to secure a home match against Ryman League Godalming
Town at Grand Drive
on August 30.
Raynes Park Vale: George Ellis, Joe Diggins, Stefan Philips, Edwin Leslie, Elliott Thompson, Rob Harmeston, Dave
Ellard, Chaz Wilson, Simon Moore, Josh Williams, Alex Zieleniewski.
Subs: Andrew Trefry, Nathan Turner, Dre Grobelaar.

Raynes Park Vale 2 v 5 Bedfont Green
CCL Premier Sat 23rd Aug 2008
It was raining goals
at Grand Drive as Raynes Park Vale were outclassed
and outfought by a quality Bedfont Green side who romped home to a 5-2 victory.
After losing their
first two league games and shipping eight goals in the process before advancing in the FA Cup, Vale were looking to the players
to carry on where they had left off in the win over Horley, but were let down badly as everybody seemed to be still basking
in cup glory.
With Joe Diggins absent
from the squad, enforced changes were made with Stefan Philips taking the left-back spot and Elliott Thompson moved to right-back.
Dan Stevens made an
immediate return to the side after a holiday break and the rest of the side appeared as they were all on holiday as they were
unable to compete in any shape or form against a very lively Bedfont Green side.
Amazingly, Raynes Park made the Green wait until the 16th
minute before scoring with a header that was typical of Raynes
Park defending. Things went from bad to worse with further goals in the
33rd and 40th minutes before the referee stopped the onslaught with the whistle for half-time.
Bedfont Green started
the second the same way they finished the first with their fourth goal after 51 minutes. It was only after this that the Green
took their foot off the pedal and allowed Raynes Park some of the ball, which allowed substitute Nathan Turner to reduce the arrears
after 60 minutes.
The next 25 minutes
provided nothing of note for either side before Bedfont Green sub Jon Barrie-Bates restored their four goal advantage in the
85th minute with a 20 yard shot that embarrassed the Vale defence. To sum the day up for Vale and prolong the pain,
the referee had to be replaced after pulling up lame to be replaced by his senior assistant which resulted in ten minutes
of stoppage time.
With Bedfont looking
to go home and have their tea, Raynes Park were awarded a penalty in the 97th minute which was coolly slotted home
by Stefan Philips to leave the Bedfont Green manager incandescent about letting two goals in and Mark Williams incandescent
about the whole day.

Bookham 1 v 4 Raynes Park Vale
CCL Premier Mon 25th Aug 2008
Raynes Park Vale picked up their first points of the season with a resounding 4-1 victory at bogey
side Bookham.
After the thrashing by Bedfont Green in the previous match, Vale needed to bounce back and restore
pride to the club and that is exactly what they did.
Before the match even started the signs did not bode well as one player failed to make the meet for
the journey to Dorking so Tom Diloway was promoted to a starting place in a move that paid dividends with a mature performance
at the back.
Vale carved their first real chance of the game in the tenth minute when a Rob Harmeston corner was
met by the head of Alex Zielenewski which evaded the keeper only to be cleared on the line by a Bookham defender.
Despite having all the possession and playing fast flowing football, Raynes Park were made to wait
until the 26th minute for their next real chance when a long through ball found Simon Moore, who beat the offside
trap before running on to try and lob the keeper who manages to get his fingers to it and plam it away to safety.
Barely a minute later some beautiful passing football freed Stefan Philips on the right whose floated
cross into the box found an unmarked Andrew Trefry who hit his header straight at the keeper.
Bookham were seriously under the cosh and moments later Dan Stevens was denied the opening goal when
his header found the net only to see it flagged for offside.
Vale got their reward after 34 minutes when a whipped cross from Harmeston bounced off the heads of
two Bookham defenders before falling to Trefry who had the simple task of heading home.
It took 39 minutes for Bookham to mount a challenge on the Raynes
Park goal and in typical fashion it came in the guise of a long ball
into the box which was half cleared before falling to a Bookham forward whose goal bound effort was somehow cleared off the
line by Stevens.
A minute later Bookham got an equaliser they didn’t deserve when a whipped corner was deflected
into the Vale goal by Raynes Park
defender Joe Diggins.
Halftime came and one wondered how Raynes
Park would react to the late equaliser in the second half.
The question was answered only five minutes into the second half when Trefry scored his, and Vale’s
second of the game with a beautifully curled shot from fully 25 yards.
Despite having all the play and making Bookham look pedestrian, Vale were made to wait until the 74th
minute to wrap up the points when a Diggins free-kick was floated into the box and headed down by Harmeston into the path
of Zielenewski whose volley smashed into the goal with the keeper all at sea.
Instead of settling for three, Raynes
Park brought on young winger Jermaine McGlashan with the purpose of heaping
more pressure on Bookham, and his quick pace and crosses into the box caused more danger for an already overworked Bookham
back line.
Raynes Park got the fourth goal their enterprising play deserved in the last minute of normal time
when a McGlashan cross found Philips unmarked in the box and with the easy task of heading home to settle the romp.
Raynes Park
Vale: Shaun Murphy, Elliott Taylor, Dan Stevens, Tom Diloway, Joe Diggins, Rob Harmeston, Elliott Thompson, Andrew Trefry,
Stefan Philips, Alex Zielenewski, Simon Moore.
Subs: Jermaine
McGlashan, Josh Williams,
Raynes Park Vale 1 v 2 Godalming Town
FA Cup Preliminary Round Sat 30th Aug 2008
Raynes Park Vale were knocked out of the FA Cup 2-1 by a less than convincing Godalming Town at Grand
Drive in heat that would have knocked out most people.
After a convincing win at Bookham in their previous match, Raynes Park were hoping to carry on where
they left off, but were hit by the loss of Simon Moore on holiday.
Either the sense of occasion or the weather knocked the zip out of the Vale players and the first half
was played in a pedestrian fashion with too much time and control of the ball given to their Ryman League visitors. Godalming
took the lead in the 20th minute when a ball into the Vale box was contested by three Vale defenders with none
of them getting a decent touch to the ball, with it falling to Kenny Ojuwu who was left with the easy chance of striking the
ball high into Shaun Murphy’s net.
Despite the lack of fight from the Vale players, matters weren’t helped by a referee who seemed
to only see the match one way and ignore any fouls on Vale players whilst blowing up for the merest touch on the Godalming
players.
Godalming got a stranglehold on the match in the last minute of the first half when a cross into the
box was met by Vale goalkeeper Murphy and Ojuwu, with the Godalming striker coming out the victor with his header into the
net. Despite Vale protests that he headed it out of Murphy’s hands the goal stood and seeing many challenges like that
penalised in the past, it would appear the referee made the right choice.
The second half saw a transformation from Raynes
Park and Godalming were knocked out their comfort zone and made to realise
they had a fight on their hands.
Five minutes after the re-start Alex Zieleniewski pulled a goal back for Vale and it was now game on.
The heat was beginning to take its toll on Vale players and all three substitutions were used in an
effort to get the game on level terms.
Despite huffing and puffing Vale couldn’t get any clear cut chances until the last minute when
Rob Harmeston found himself on the end of a Josh Williams free kick and with the goal at his mercy. To the surprise of everybody
in the ground Harmeston blasted his effort over the bar from three yards out.
After the game the Godalming manager apologised to the Godalming support for his team’s performance
instead of giving credit to a Raynes Park
side with plenty of heart.
Raynes Park
Vale: Shaun Murphy, Joe Diggins, Elliot Taylor, Edwin Leslie, Dan Stevens, Elliott
Thompson, Andrew Trefry, Stefan Philips, Rob Harmeston, Alex Zieleniewski, Nathan Turner.
Subs: Matt
May, Kay Oladipo, Josh Williams, Sean David, Eric Karikari.

Marks Programme Notes Wed 08th April v Bookham
Welcome to everyone from Bookham for tonight's encounter.
Sat saw our poor run of form continue with a 1-0 reversal
to relegation fearing Sandhurst Town. I
couldn't knock the effort of the lads but it was a day very lacking in any kind of offensive quality from us.
Obviously
missing Danno, Elliott and Tom would always hinder my preparation but we still had enough on the pitch to have caused Sandhurst more problems on a good day.
At this stage of the season it won't be a case of massive
changes as most of the squad have been superb for me this year and I simply don't have the resources to, it is a case of me
trying to get the confidence back into them to go out and play like I know that they can!
It is good to have Dilloway,
Thompson and Phillips back available tonight and they will all come into contention.

Marks Programme Notes Sat 04th April v Sandhurst Town
Welcome to every one from Sandhurst Town
for todays game at Grand Drive as we hope to start
another good run to see out the season.
We haven't been at our best over the last 3 games and have stuttered with erratic
performances. Chessington was a game to forget for every reason possible and culminated with a 95th minute defeat. Horley
was another non starter as we threw away a lead to lose to a side who were down to 10 men and finally Cobham was another tentative
showing, 2-0 up and cruising at half time before unsuccessfully doing our best to throw it away. It is the performances rather
than the results that are the worry though, we have dominated and matched some of the top teams and failed to show up against
the strugglers.
This is what every team gets in every season though, poor spells. The fact that our poor spells have
been put into the shade by our good ones is testament to the quality young players that we have at Grand Drive right now and
they have done superbly well to have us fighting for a top 6 finish with 7 games to go, rather than relegation, let's not
forget that! It is completely unrealistic of me to expect them to play well all season without blips and hopefully they will
be feeling refreshed today and ready to go again. My main hope for the lads is that they can really enjoy the run in, get
the smiles back on their faces and play some good football, if they can do that then good results will be a by product. We
have a few key members out in Stevens and Thompson but I still have plenty in the dressing room to ensure that we give a good
account of ourselves. Sandhurst are on a good run at this point but still caught up in
the struggle at the bottom and we will have to compete well to take points today.
I'd like to thank everyone who helped
the club to meet the demands of the league with regards to ground improvements, your efforts were tireless and we hope to
reward you with 3 points today. Enjoy the game and get behind the team! MW
Marks View - 25th Jan 2009
Saturday
provided us with a big surprise when the referee declared our pitch fit to play after we had expected to be thwarted following
a heavy week of rain, credit must go to our grounds man Mick Cox, who’s hard work was rewarded as we ground out a 3-0
win over visitors Guildford City to complete a league double over them.
We had stressed
how the game would be won in the conditions and it would be the team that worked the hardest, we didnt expect a pretty game
as we knew the pitch would cut up. Thankfully, even though Guildford worked hard from start
to finish, we more than matched them. Our back four were superb throughout and gave us a solid base to play from and acquired
our 2nd clean sheet in 3 games. When it came down to it I also felt that we were the better team, created the better chances
and fully deserved the win.
We started
brightly and maintained the momentum, Rob Sheridan opened the scoring on the half hour mark, deftly controlling Tom Dilloway’s
50 yard through ball before slotting confidently past the keeper to give us a half time advantage. Marc Skinner was thwarted
by an offside flag when he headed home a shot that was going in and we were also denied a more comfortable cushion by some
good saves from their keeper.
2ns half
saw us start slowly and come into the game before controlling it, however at 1-0 there was always the hope for Guildford that they could grab the equaliser. It wasn’t until the 88th minute when Josh Williams
fired home Rob Sheridan’s deflected shot just 5 minutes after coming on as a sub, we were all really pleased for Josh,
he has worked really hard in the past 6 weeks and fully earnt his inclusion in the squad, he can bang them in for fun if he
gets his confidence up and hopefully the goal will give him the boost he needs. Ross Chalke then benefiited
from Sheridans / shot to put the icing on the cake in the
last minute. Elliott Thompson was voted as man of the match after an eye opening performance at centre back with Dan Stevens
against 2 experienced CCL strikers in Joe Loyza and Leon White.
It was a
pleasing win with a whole hearted performance and atmosphere from a solid squad, we had a good balance and I am hopeful that
I can keep this squad playing together for the remainder of the season. The clean sheet was a big boost too, we always feel
that we have plenty of goals in us and if we can keep restricting the opposition we can win a lot more games before the end
of the season.
This week
we face another encounter with Egham Town
and a trip to Bedfont and we will be endeavouring to boost our points tally weather permitting.
Marks View - 19th Jan 2009
Saturday
saw us make the long trip to Hartley Wintney to take on the bottom side in the league. After our opening day defeat to them,
us being only one of the 2 sides that they have beaten, it was vital that we went there in the right frame of mind. Four players
strolling in half an hour late was not ideal and standards on that front will have to improve.
We went into
the game with a couple of changes. Simon Moore having left the club was replaced by Assistant Manager Chris Wye on the bench.
Simon felt he was able to play at a higher standard than he is at RPV and was frustrated with our facilities and has moved
on to Epsom & Ewell. All at RPV would like to thank Simon for his efforts while at the club & wish him well for the
future.
Elliott Thompson
returned to the line up in place of Jordan Waller following his absence in the 3-0 win over Egham Town. Matt May (Work Commitments) was
also replaced in goal by George Ellis for his first appearance since our FA Cup win over Horley Town in August. Other than that the
squad remained the same.
The first
half ended 0-0. We had hit the woodwork and forced their keeper into a couple of good saves and George Ellis had made a couple
of useful saves in our goal. It was a fairly even half as we failed to perform aside Ellis, Stevens, Dilloway and Chalke who
looked the most likely to create something.
Hartley took
the lead on the hour and that sparked us into life as we threw men forward in an attempt to prevent the bottom club doing
the double over us. We hit the bar a further 3 times and missed a couple of open goals to boot as it looked like it would
not be our day.
Marc Skinner
equalised following good work from Sheridan and Chalke with 10 minutes left before Sheridan
was played through by Chalke to slam home what should have been a winner on 90.
It should
have been but a little bit of experience and 10 minutes of stoppage time cost us the win. We got deeper in defence and turned
possession back to them to easily allowing them to run at us. Hartley were awarded a penalty in the 98th minute following
a double challenge from Dilloway and Stevens. We ultimately paid the price for too many missed chances and were also a bit
unlucky but the facts are we must be better than we were all round. The main disappointment comes in looking at the table
and seeing that we have dropped 5 points to the bottom side.
Man of the
Match went to George Ellis but there were a few disappointments out there, particularly in attack and I will have to search
for a better formula.
Saturday
see's us take on a much improved Guildford City and as always in this league, I expect a tough encounter, my players will
have to apply themselves to get something from the game but if they do, I believe that they will.

Marks View - 14th Jan 2009
We had our
first game prior to Christmas at Egham Town
on Tuesday night and came away with a 3-0 win, only our 3rd clean sheet of the season.
Dan Stevens
returned at centre back for his 1st game since mid November and marshalled us well enough on a torrid surface ably supported
by Tom Dilloway who had a superb game.
Alex Zieleniewski
also made his first start since September and it is good to have him back around in a Vale shirt.
The game
was reasonably open with us missing the clearest of the chances in the first half but with Egham threatening on the counter.
The first
goal would always be vital and after a poor opening 10 minute spell in the 2nd half where we put ourselves under pressure,
we took the lead when sub Jermaine McGlashan threaded Marc Skinner (Who has become our most capped player with 301 appearances)
through to stride clear and slot past the keeper after 69 minutes. From then we controlled the game fairly well and when Jack
Murphy glanced in Tom Dilloways inswinging free kick on 82mins the game was effectively over before Rob Sheridan capped an
impressive 2nd half central midfield performance with our third in stoppage time. It was a great away win given the conditions
of the pitch and the lads showed great character to come away with the points.
Jack Murphy
was named Man of the Match for another of his tenacious midfield displays.
As we enter
the 2nd half of the season I am hopeful that we can build upon a much better start to the season than we had last year. At
this point last year we had 19 points from 23 games, this year we have 30 points from 21 games. The aim will to be amass 40
points as soon as possible and then go from there really but my hope is that we can cement ourselves into the top 10. With
a decent run its not impossible for us to aim a little higher, the top 6 for RPV would be a massive achievement with our resources
and I'd be thrilled if we could do that.
We have a
solid squad of around 21 players at the minute, but its always a case of players availability at our level. I would like to
hope that we could select from 24 players for the rest of the season but in my time at RPV I am used to the circumstances
of our players availability and fully accept that I may have to use that many in the next month alone! |
